Iran And Israel Go To Battle ... Over Denim

Iran and Israel are at it again, but at least it's not the nuclear issue. This time it's jeans.

It started last week when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told BBC's Persian TV that "if the Iranian people had their way, they'd be wearing bluejeans; they'd have Western music; they'd have free elections."

For Netanyahu, the leading critic of Iran's nuclear program, it was a rare chance to speak to the Iranian public ? an estimated 11 million watch the channel. But his freedom metrics were off by a pair of jeans.

Iranian elections may not be that free, and their music options may be somewhat limited. But young Iranians are proud of their freedom to choose their own pants, and often they choose jeans.

An Online 'Jeans Protest'

Many young Iranians responded to Netanyahu's comment by posting photos of themselves with jeans and Western music.

Just one day after the comments, a Facebook page called "Our jeans in Netanyahu's face, Bibi watch out" had attracted more than 600 followers.

Australian pop star Missy Higgins briefly became the face of Western music when a photo of her On a Clear Night album circulated on Twitter.

One particularly fashion-conscious tweeter noted that jeans are behind the times.

One of the many ironies is that Iranians have expressed their national pride with quintessentially American apparel.

And in responding to Netanyahu, many young Iranians found ways to use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter that are formally blocked in Iran.

Many comments, like the ones above, were written in English.

Women have managed to incorporate jeans into their modest outfits. But it's worth noting that most women, who are required to keep their hair covered and wear loose-fitting clothes, did not show their faces in photos posted online.

The Darker Side Of Denim

In a dark twist to the flurry of comments about jeans, multiple photos appeared on Twitter showing murdered Iranian nuclear scientists and their kids wearing jeans. Iran has blamed Israel for those deaths.

One photo was of Darioush Rezai-Nejad, shown with his daughter.

And the photo above shows the young son of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan. He was killed by a bomb last January, and his boy ? in jeans ? stands next to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Finally, in his interview, Netanyahu spoke about Neda Agha-Soltan, a young woman who was fatally shot at an anti-government protest in 2009. She was a key point in Netanyahu's argument about Iran's tyranny.

The moment she died in the street, Neda was wearing jeans.

Channing Frye / Frye (chest) is targeting a December return, Arizona Sports

FLAGSTAFF -- After nearly 18 months away from a basketball practice, it figured that Channing Frye would need to ease himself back into the fold. That will be true when the Suns' practice scrimmage time starts Tuesday evening but Frye opened camp Tuesday morning like every other player in most ways and better than other players in another. Frye went through the entire first camp session, a non-contact practice at Northern Arizona. After the practice was over, Suns shooters took 200 3-pointers in 20-shot blocks around the arc at NAU's Rolle Activity Center. Frye made 152, a total only topped by guard Shannon Brown's 153.

Channing Frye (heart) said that he's targeting a return in December.

Impacts: "I don?t want to go out there looking like a bum," Frye said. "I want to go out there cooking." It's not going to be easy for Frye to come back after missing an entire season due to an enlarged heart. Although, he's already back at practice and is on the comeback trail, so this does seem like a realistic expectation. He's a sharpshooting stretch four, which means he could emerge as a hot pickup in standard leagues upon his return.

Channing Frye participated in non-contact drills during Tuesday's practice.

Impacts: He made 152 of 200 3-pointers in practice, so he's shaken off the rust fairly quickly in the shooting department. Frye has a very good chance to get back in the rotation as a stretch four, especially with the team's lack of depth. Head coach Jeff Hornacek said that he wants his team to have 50 of its offense installed this week in Flagstaff, so Frye will have some catching up to do. We'll be monitoring his progress throughout camp.

Twitter?s analytics dashboard now tracks tweeted links and click-throughs for websites

twitter logo 730x276 Twitters analytics dashboard now tracks tweeted links and click throughs for websites

Twitter recently introduced a new section to its analytics dashboard which allows brands and advertisers to track the number of links to their website that are posted to its service, Marketing Land reports.

The new ?Websites? section can be configured to track for a specific domain to show the number of tweets and click-throughs that Twitter is generating for the site as a whole or specific pages. Webmasters simply add a line of code to their site, in the same way that a Google Analytics tracker work.

Obviously there are existing social and publisher dashboards and services that present similar data ? to help show traffic from Twitter and other social platforms ? but this adds further strength to Twitter?s own ad dashboard,?which got a big makeover in June. It?s not immediately clear when the ?Websites? feature was added, however.

Straight Man Gets Emotional Over Gay Brother?s Struggles After Wedding

In this emotional video, David Stevens, a straight man, discusses what happened after he posted pictures of his gay brother?s wedding on Facebook. After telling the reader about the beautiful and loving relationship between his brother and his partner, Stevens shares a Facebook message he received following their decision to tie the knot. The message reads:

Hey David, I am removing you from my friends list. Sorry man, that latest post is way over the top. Homosexuals joining in holy matrimony? I don?t think so. The holy bible speaks out against homosexuality and speaks highly of holy matrimony between a man and a woman. It?s nothing more than a slap in the face to those who choose God?s word for homosexual s to join in a holy marriage. I?m only defriending you so I don?t have to look at your anti-God stuff anymore ? nothing personal.

Originally posted on his personal blog, Stevens? nuanced and thought-proving response is both emotional and insightful, and will leave you reaching for the tissues.

Be sure to watch the video all the way through to hear his response and the larger perspective he gained about what it means to be LGBT.

States resist, build nascent insurance markets

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? With new online health insurance exchanges set to launch Tuesday, consumers in many Southern and Plains states will have to look harder for information on how the marketplaces work than their counterparts elsewhere.

In Republican-led states that oppose the federal Affordable Care Act, the strategy has ranged from largely ignoring the health overhaul to encouraging residents not to sign up and even making it harder for nonprofit organizations to provide information about the exchanges.

Health care experts worry that ultimately consumers in these states could end up confused about the exchanges, and the overall rollout of the law could be hindered.

"Without the shared planning and the cooperation of the state government, it's much harder for them to be ready to implement this complicated law," said Rachel Grob of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who has studied differences in how states are implementing segments of the law.

Several of the 14 Northeast, Midwest and Western states running their own insurance exchanges have spent weeks on marketing and advertising campaigns to help residents get ready to buy health insurance. At least $684 million will be spent on publicity explaining what people need to do next and persuading the doubtful to sign up for coverage, according to data compiled The Associated Press.

By contrast, most states across the South have declined federal grants to advertise the exchanges and ceded the right to run the marketplaces themselves. And early Sunday, the Republican-led U.S. House added to legislation that would avert a partial government shutdown a one-year delay of the creation of the marketplaces. Democrats have said delaying the health care law would sink the bill, and the White House promised a veto.

Governors from the Carolinas to Kansas have decried the exchanges and the rest of the law, which was passed by Congress in 2010 and many argue reaffirmed when voters re-elected President Obama in 2012. The Supreme Court in 2012 upheld the constitutionality of most of the law; a piece of the Medicaid expansion was an exception.

"When it came to Obamacare, we didn't just say 'no,' we said 'never,'" South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said last month alongside U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, whom she appointed last December when Jim DeMint resigned. "And we're going to keep on fighting until we get people like Sen. Scott and everybody else in Congress to defund Obamacare."

Others have gone beyond fiery rhetoric.

Missouri's lieutenant governor urged residents to refuse to sign up for federal health insurance, while Kansas legislators and the state's governor enacted a law symbolically declaring that residents can't be forced to buy health insurance.

In Florida, state officials ordered county health departments to bar from their property navigators hired under federal grants to explain the plan's complexities. Broward County commissioners last week ignored that ban and voted to allow navigators and other counselors into county offices, including health departments.

'We've encountered many, many issues with this, and this is a breakthrough for us to be able to go into the libraries, the health departments," said Jerson Dulis, who was trained to help enroll people in the state exchange. He works for Broward Community & Family Health Centers Inc., which received a federal grant to provide consumers understand and enroll in health insurance plans.

In places where state officials have declined to disseminate information, the work is left to nonprofit organizations and word-of-mouth among consumers.

North Carolina is among the states that have left the running of its exchange to the federal government. This year, the state refunded what remained of a $74 million federal grant that would have helped consumers and linked computers.

Asa Gregory, 36, of Wilson, works sporadically as a substitute public school teacher and has lacked health insurance for seven years, paying the medical bills after a traffic accident with help from his parents.

"I would like to have health insurance. I think that's a no-brainer," he said.

Gregory said he's been checking out the government's information web site at www.healthcare.gov but feels "there's certainly quite a bit for me to learn."

"I'd say, percentagewise, what do I know about what's happening on October 1st? I'd say maybe 40 percent," he said. "I'm not confident that I know a majority of the information, but it's gathering, and I'm looking at it. I'm preparing for the opportunity of the marketplace."

Sherry Graham, 72, said she's hoping insurance company competition will drive down the price she pays for her daughter's individual coverage. Graham said rising premiums force her to squeeze her pension and Social Security checks to pay her daughter's $420 monthly insurance premium because the younger woman works only part-time.

"Every year here I am trying to find another $100 or so to add to the monthly premium to keep her insured," said Graham, of Raleigh. "It's enough to hurt. I have to figure out where to get that money from because I'm not getting a raise, like ever."

In response to confusion over the health overhaul, officials in the Carolinas have grudgingly made moves to lessen disruptions.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory's health agency recently urged county social services departments to discuss the insurance exchanges when people come in seeking food stamps or child care help. The Republican governor's administration also encouraged social services agencies to offer space as available to navigators.

In South Carolina, which also left advertising and running the exchange to the federal government, the state Medicaid agency ramped up its call center to handle 50 percent more calls as people have questions about the law, deputy director John Supra said.

Others are taking a harder line.

Florida Republicans are vehemently pushing back against implementing parts of the law. The Florida Department of Health recently ordered county health departments across the state to ban navigators from conducting outreach on their property. Florida has one of the highest uninsured rates in the country with an estimated 3.5 million lacking insurance.

Gov. Rick Scott, a vocal opponent of the law, has echoed GOP talking points about privacy concerns, penning a letter last week to top congressional leaders expressing concern about the security of people's personal information as they sign up for health coverage under. Scott's strong opposition has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats.

"It seems that Gov. Scott and his staff spend their days conjuring up new ways to keep Floridians in the dark about health care choices coming Oct 1," U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch said at a recent meeting with a handful of navigators.

In Kansas, a 2011 law Republican legislators and Gov. Sam Brownback enacted declared that residents can't be forced to buy health insurance or penalized. The measure was largely a symbolic protest, given supremacy of the federal law.

Missouri bars state employees from helping implement an insurance exchange, leaving it entirely to federal direction. Last week, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder this week urged Missouri residents to resist the federal law by refusing to sign up for health insurance. They could be forced to pay a fine of $95 or more if they don't.

"I don't see any reason to enable the implementation of this law," Kinder said. "I think the whole thing is in the process of collapsing."
