MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) ? Stage and screen actor-director Behn Cervantes died Thursday, August 15. He was 74.
Two sources confirmed his death to Rappler, but his dying wish complicated the announcement. He wished that his death would be announced a week after, according to a close family friend.
Cervantes died at 10:15 am. His close friends started talking about it on social media, including theater actor Bart Guingona and UP professor and activist Judy Taguiwalo, whose Facebook post in July about Cervantes' hospitalization was the initial source of a Rappler article about his illness.
Minutes after, however, they deleted their posts when informed about the dying wish of the late director.
Cervantes was hospitalized July 28, following a bout with pneumonia with complications.
Cervantes, who was supposed to turn 75 on August 26, was a leading figure in Philippine theater. Among his notable works in Philippine cinema, where he is also critically acclaimed, is the 1976 social-realist film "Sakada."
Together with the late film director Lino Brocka, Cervantes had also been at the forefront of the anti-Marcos protest movement during the 14-year dictatorship. - Rappler.com
