Iran releases prominent human rights lawyer

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has released a prominent human rights lawyer after keeping her in prison for three years, relatives said.

Reza Khandan, the husband of lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, told The Associated Press that authorities brought his wife home and told her she has been freed.

Khandan said "we'd expected her to come for a short leave but they have told her she is free."

Sotoudeh, who defended opposition activists, had been convicted of security offenses and was sentenced to 6 years after appeals. She went to prison in September 2011.

Khandan said Sotoudeh will investigate her case in the coming days to learn on what grounds she was freed.

The release may be linked to the recent election of President Hasan Rouhani, who has promised openness both inside and outside Iran.
