The Pioneers Festival kicked off in Vienna this week and by the looks of the 2,300 attendees at the amazing Hofburg Imperial palace, the conference is shaping up to be a stand-out event in Europe, not least because it is enormously upbeat and positive. Something we need more of in Europe. With a palace as a setting, art installations and a Croatian-born electric super car in the foyer (the Rimac), this is quite a ?European? event. The location of Vienna also means it?s attracting a lot of German, Austrian, Central, Eastern and Southern European startups. Hell, they can drive or get a train here from just about anywhere in Europe. Poikos a startup with a technology for imaging and measuring the body in 3D, was the overall winner in the startup competition, winning ?25,000 prize money. Klash won the audience choice. Helioz won second place and BeamApp won third place. So here?s a fast run-down of the startups appearing, you can grab links to them from this page.

It?s always a good to examine what beliefs we are operating under?if we have?false?beliefs that are not examined, then we continue to act on them. B2B marketing is no different?what are the myths that we might believe that are possibly guiding our actions in the wrong direction? With a tip of the hat to Bob Bly, whose June article in Target Marketing magazine dispels 7 B2B marketing myths, I?d like to tackle some myth-busting of my own.?
Myth No. 1:? Lead generation is the top job of B2B marketers.? There is overwhelming evidence that B2B marketers consider lead generation their most important contribution.
So why, you may rightly wonder, am I calling this a myth?? Well, maybe it?s more of a misconception than a myth.?? But I am arguing that the true top job of B2B marketers should be customer retention, or customer penetration, which is where all the profit lies.
Of course, we need to feed the funnel, and lead generation is of course a close second priority.? But for delivering real value to shareholders, marketing should be spending considerably more effort on supporting the goal of extracting value from the customer relationship.
In B2B, this might mean strategies like:
My point is that retention should be viewed as a top priority, dispelling the myth that if marketers generate tons of leads,?they?ve?done their job.
Myth No. 2:? Social media is a flash in the pan.? B2B marketers are embracing social media with gusto, but many still view it as a toy, something to play around with, most likely in the corporate communications or PR departments.
Wrong.? These channels are ready for revenue generation.? I ran across a fascinating example of this at the DMA12 conference in Las Vegas last month, where Cheryl Mikovch of IBM shared the story of how the marketing team that supports inside sales has enabled reps over the past couple of years to use social media to identify opportunity and deepen their account relationships.? The result?? For one of IBM?s public cloud offerings, 15% of the closes via inside sales could be attributed to the social selling effort.? When it comes to IBM revenue levels ($107 billion, worldwide, through all channels), that?s a lot of money.
The IBM social selling journey began with a market audit that showed 37% of IBM buyers have used social media to engage with IT vendors, and that 77% of customers were very or somewhat likely to do so in the future.? So IBM understood they had to be there, with vigor.
The next step was to build a scalable, replicable social selling process, beginning with listening and engaging clients and prospects, and getting involved in the discussion?earlier than the competition.
Tactically, the process features a ?rep page,? where every inside sales rep (this means lead development teams and product specialists, as well as quota-bearing account reps) has a dedicated URL, filled with social media tools, to build his or her web presence and engage in direct communications.? The marketing department provides professionally written content, some fed automatically to the rep page, and some available for the reps to pick up according to their needs.
The marketing team also provides training to the inside sales reps, showing them how to engage effectively at groups and discussion boards, to listen and contribute, to compose tweets and create their own video messages.
Word of social selling?s success has spread among IBM reps on 170 countries, primarily through rep word of mouth. Helping drive 15% of public cloud inside sales, this thing is no myth.
Myth No. 3: Old media are dead.? Au contraire.? We?re now in an integrated marketing communications world, and each medium has a role to play. ?Companies go 100% digital at their peril.
Direct mail, for example, is still an excellent prospecting tool due to the wide availability of highly targeted lists, and the impact of corporate spam filters and the dear old delete key, which reduces the productivity of email for cold prospecting.? Trade shows are making a comeback, with higher quality attendance and happier exhibitors as a result.
Got any B2B marketing myths to add to the list?

Some employers refuse to play by the rules. What is one way in which employers break the rules and harm our workers? compensation system? Corrupt employers misclassify workers. That is, they incorrectly label employees as independent contractors or outside consultants to avoid important laws related to safety and benefits. This is a disturbing trend which I have previously discussed.
The following is a quote from Leonard Jernigan published on Jon Gelman?s workers? compensation blog that sums up the problem misclassification causes in our workers? compensation system. Both of these attorneys are considered experts in the field of workers? compensation benefits:
When workers are misclassified, insurance companies do not consider them employees. The injured workers are then denied workers? compensation benefits. Additionally, the insurance companies are not paid insurance premiums and are not adequately reserved for the risk of injury by those workers.
When employees are misclassified, everyone suffers. The worker will most likely have his claim for benefits denied. That worker may be able to win his claim but the resulting litigation could prove costly to everyone. Additionally, other employers who followed the law lose because they shoulder the costs of the system. Over the years, I?ve litigated many claims where the employer tried to avoid paying for workers? compensation insurance by misclassifying its employees. Ultimately, we are often able to get these injured workers the benefits to which they were entitled. Unfortunately, the bad acts of these few employers resulted in a lot of pain and expense getting there.

One of the things my husband and I enjoy every time we shop for groceries in Korea is the free food. If you go to Homeplus or Emart on the weekend, you will find free food in almost every food section, such as mandu (dumpling), ham, sausage, chicken nuggets, noodles, cheese, bread, cereal, fruit,?and would you believe, even samgyupsal and galbi??Drinks like coffee, juice, milk, yogurt drink and other new beverages are also offered to shoppers.
Every time we go to the Philippines and shop for pasalubong (gift), my husband would ask why there aren?t any free food and drinks in the grocery store. This year?s vacation, however, he didn?t need to ask me the same thing, because he FINALLY found a booth in SM Hypermarket that gives free noodles. He was so?excited to?get a freebie?from a?Filipino grocery store for the first time that he actually looked like a four-year old waiting for?the?ice cream man to come. He was the only one in there who seemed interested in getting free noodles, while other shoppers were busy with their shopping. I thought?that scenario was amusing, so I got my camera and took?my husband?s?photo as he was waiting for his noodles. Just then,?one of the staff members approached me and?said that?taking pictures in the grocery store is not allowed. I asked him why. He?told me it?s?their policy in SM. I?wasn?t satisfied with that answer, so I kept probing until the man didn?t know what to say anymore. Hubby got his free noodles and told me to stop torturing the poor staff member.
I got thirsty from?complaining about SM?s policy of ?keeping their grocery store TOP SECRET?, so I was looking for something to drink. Good thing, my husband spotted free coffee. I suddenly remembered Korea where there?s free coffee anywhere you go. We?were each given a paper cup?filled to the brim. That?s the Filipino way of drinking coffee? the cup is always full. In Korea, it?s usually half a?cup.
Hubby liked the coffee, so he bought?a 30-piece pack of the new Kopiko?Astig. If you like strong coffee, like my husband, you may like this flavor, but as for me, Kopiko Brown is still the best instant coffee in the Philippines. ^^
?
My husband and I should have a shopping motto: It?s not the freebie that counts, but the excitement of getting a freebie. ^^
Be the first to like this.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The city of San Francisco cleaned up Monday after a rowdy World Series celebration turned violent in some neighborhoods and police arrested three dozen people.
The majority of arrests occurred in the Mission District, and included two people on gun charges, police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.
"There were celebrations all over the city, and they were all peaceful and upbeat," Andraychak said. "Unfortunately, as the night progressed, this other element emerged and were intent on doing violence."
Bonfires of trash were lit in several intersections around the city, and a public transit bus was torched. Windows of several businesses and vehicles were broken, including a news van.
Firefighters needed a police escort to douse a bonfire near the Giants' ball park. They also fought fires fueled by couches, news racks and other debris throughout the city.
Police said a damage report was not yet available.
Mayor Edwin Lee announced a ticker-tape parade would be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Market Street to Civic Center Plaza.
A parade after the Giants won the series in 2010 drew hundreds of thousands of fans.
After the game ended Sunday, fans across the city left their televisions and rushed outside, greeting diners, bar patrons and other merrymakers Sunday night after the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep the Series for their second title in three years.
In the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.
Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they had watched the game on a Jumbotron.
The thousands of fans assembled at the site exploded in a roar with the final out.
Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15, and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.
"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."
Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game. Strangers hugged strangers, and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes were shared freely despite a heavy police presence.
"This is San Francisco, "said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."
Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.
"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

PHILADELPHIA New insight into the aggressive behavior of certain adult B-acute lymphoblastic leukemias has provided researchers with a potential new prognostic biomarker and a promising new therapeutic target.
The research, conducted by Ari Melnick, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center for Biomedical and Physical Sciences at Weill Cornell Medical College and a hematologist-oncologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and colleagues, was published in Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Although B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia is highly curable in children, the disease is usually fatal in adults, and researchers have yet to identify why this is the case. Part of the explanation for the poorer outcomes in adults is the higher frequency of genetic alterations associated with unfavorable prognosis.
In order to better understand why these genetic alterations are associated with poor outcomes, Melnick and colleagues studied 215 diagnostic specimens obtained from adults with B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia who were participating in a large Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group phase III clinical trial.
"We performed an integrative epigenomics study to decode the instructions that determine how these cells behave," Melnick said. "The hope was that this would allow us to identify better survival biomarkers and new therapeutic targets."
In many cancers, genetic alterations work in conjunction with epigenetic changes (changes in the way that DNA is modified and packaged) to promote cancerous behaviors. Looking at the B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia specimens, Melnick and colleagues found that many of the leukemias' bad traits were a result of changes in the epigenetic code. In many cases, the epigenetic changes were directly linked to the proteins generated from the genetic alterations and could be used to identify key master regulators required for the leukemic cells to live, according to Melnick.
"For example, we found that a cell surface molecule called CD25 was an extremely powerful indicator of the presence of the most aggressive and fatal cases," Melnick said.
The researchers also discovered that abnormal forms of the E2A and MLL proteins occurring in B-acute lymphoblastic leukemias directly reprogram epigenetic settings at their binding sites throughout the genome.
Most notably, the researchers found that mutant forms of MLL epigenetically reprogramed leukemia cells to express the powerful oncoprotein BCL6, and that BCL6 was required to maintain the proliferation and survival of the leukemia cells.
"We then designed inhibitors of BCL6 and showed that we could kill leukemia cells from patients enrolled in the clinical trial by blocking its function," Melnick said.
Based on these results, the researchers plan to use CD25 as a biomarker to identify those patients who have the worst disease in the next set of clinical trials, and to tailor treatment appropriately. In addition, BCL6 inhibitors are currently being translated for use in humans, and they hope to develop clinical trials targeting BCL6 in MLL-rearranged leukemias.
"These results will ultimately lead to biomarkers that help guide treatment and to the development of therapies that will be more effective for patients with this aggressive form of leukemia," Melnick said.

HONOLULU (Reuters) - At least 100,000 people in Hawaii were ordered to move from the shoreline to higher ground late on Saturday after a tsunami warning, but the first waves were less forceful than had been feared and no damage was initially reported.
The tsunami, triggered by a powerful earthquake off Canada's Pacific coast, began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Hawaii time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, as motorists clogged roadways in a mass exodus from low-lying areas.
"The tsunami arrived about when we expected it should," Senior Geophysicist Gerard Fryer told reporters at a news conference, saying: "I was expecting it to be a little bigger."
The height of the first surge initially was put at 3 feet, but the warning center subsequently reported that early tsunami wave activity peaked at just 2.5 feet at the island of Maui.
There were no immediate reports of serious flooding or damage, but officials warned that additional waves were still possible and that wave heights of up to 6 feet could be reached in some places.
Following the initial surge, Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle said it was unclear if the worst had yet passed.
"All of these events are capricious, and you can't really tell which wave is going to be packing the most punch, and sometimes it's the second, third or even the very last one," he told CNN, adding that it might be several hours before officials could give the all-clear and cancel the evacuation.
Tsunami warning sirens in the islands were activated on short notice due to initial confusion among scientists about the quake's undersea epicenter and the extent of the tsunami threat posted by the temblor.
Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle announced that all police and emergency personnel were being pulled out from potential flood zones shortly before the first wave, leaving anyone defying evacuation orders to fend for themselves. He urged motorists who remained caught in harm's way due to gridlocked roads to abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot.
"If you are stuck in traffic, you might consider getting out of your car and consider walking to higher ground. You will have to assess your own situation, depending on where you are right now. Right now it is critical," he said
Vindell Hsu, a geophysicist at the Tsunami Warning Center said an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people who live in Hawaii's coastal zones had been urged to move to higher ground until after 10:30 p.m.
Governor Neil Abercrombie issued an emergency proclamation for the state.
The tsunami center cautioned that wave height could not be predicted and that the first wave "may not be the largest".
It said: "All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face".
CANADA QUAKE
The warnings followed a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 that hit Canada's Pacific coastal province of British Columbia late on Saturday [ID:nL1E8LS03H].
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles.
The Earthquakes Canada agency said the quake was followed by numerous aftershocks as large as magnitude 4.6 and that a small tsunami has been recorded by a deep-ocean pressure sensor.
On Oahu, Hawaii's most populous island, tsunami warning sirens could be heard blaring out across Honolulu, the state capital, prompting an immediate crush of traffic, with many motorists stopping at service stations to top up with gasoline. At movie theaters, films were halted in mid-screening as announcements were made urging patrons to return to their homes.
The last time Oahu had a tsunami warning was after the devastating Japanese earthquake of March 2011.
On Honolulu's famed Waikiki Beach, residents of high-rise buildings were told to move to the third floor or higher for safety.
Stephany Sofos, a resident of Diamond Head near Waikiki, said most people had either evacuated or relocated to a higher floor.
"I moved my car up the hill, packed up my computer and have my animals all packed and with me," Sofos said, saying that she had not yet seen any obvious receding of the surf, a telltale sign that a tsunami wave is imminent.
"I'm pretty confident because we have a lot of reefs out there and that will prevent any major damage. Maybe it's a false confidence, but I'm not really worried," she said, adding, "It is nerve-wracking."
Tsunami Warning Center Geophysicist Gerard Fryer said the tsunami had caught scientists by surprise.
"We thought that the earthquake was on land and when we learned that it was deeper undersea and we gathered more information, we had no choice but to issue a warning," he said
As residents scrambled to reach higher ground on Oahu, at least four major road accidents were reported by the state Emergency Medical Services. More accidents were also reported on the outer islands.
A tsunami advisory was also posted for coastal areas of northern California and Oregon, where a maximum sea level rise was estimated at 6 inches, the National Weather Service said. The agency said no significant flooding was expected.

LONDON - Police investigating the sex abuse scandal surrounding late BBC children's television host Jimmy Savile have arrested pop star Gary Glitter in connection with the case, British media said Sunday.
Metropolitan Police said they arrested a man in his 60s early Sunday morning at his London home, on suspicion of sexual offences, and that he remains in custody in a London police station.
The force did not identify the man, but British media including the BBC and Press Association reported he was Glitter, 68, a former rock musician and a convicted sex offender. Glitter's real name is Paul Gadd.
Hundreds of potential victims have come forward since police began their investigation into sex abuse allegations against Savile, the longtime host of popular shows "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" who died at age 84 last year. Most allege abuse by Savile, but some said they were abused by Savile and others.
Glitter, best known for "Rock & Roll (Part 1&2)," was convicted in 2006 in Vietnam of committing "obscene acts with children" ? offences involving girls aged 10 and 11. He was deported in 2008.
He had a previous conviction in Britain for possessing child pornography.
The scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises.
Police have said that though the majority of cases related to Savile alone, some involved the entertainer and other, unidentified suspects. In addition, some potential victims who reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against unidentified men that did not involve the BBC host.

In a recent TIME article, 'Reinventing College', online?colleges-universities, including in the form of?offering 'MOOCs' (massive open online courses)?or as scaled-down for-profits offering outright credits (such as Udacity) have been bandied about as a solution to two major problems inherent in U.S. tertiary education:
1) The massive college debt accrued by graduates, now estimated at over $900 billion and which undermines their economic viability in a nation with few high paying decent jobs, and
2) The fact the U.S.?now lags behind major competitors in terms of numbers of people in the workforce with college degrees. (The U.S. has currently 54 million compared to 127 million in India and 161 million in the OECD nations.
Another sobering fact takeaway from the piece: despite all the massive college debt "three semesters of college have produced a barely noticeable impact on critical thinking, complex reasoning? and writing skills" - according to a 2011 book, 'Academically Adrift'.
This is very serious indeed, because in today's multi-faceted economic and scientific?world - where many complex issues bear on the electorate, from Keynesian?stimulus advantage, to supply side nonsense, to the concept of 'aggregate demand', not to mention global warming-climate change and the consumption of fossil fuels beyond the practical EROEI?(energy returned on energy invested) limit, we absolutely must have intelligent and well educated people to be able to process the information and make informed decisions.?This often requires not only critical thinking and complex reasoning abilities but the knowledge by which to parse and sort out the competing claims.?One therefore must be practiced in the application of critical thinking and complex reasoning to actual scientific and economic questions.
I maintain, despite all the hoopla about?college "options" (i.e. replacing the formal college degree with one from an online venue) that there is no substitute for partaking in the actual, physical college environment. ??Now, this is not to say some benefit can't arrive via Moocs, e.g. such as at MIT:
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/
and Yale University:
http://oyc.yale.edu/
However, ?intensive education toward a degree must be necessarily bound up with brick and mortar institutions. Why? Let me priovide several reasons:
1) Accreditation:
This is the sine qua non indicator for quality assurance. Given thousands of schools, universities, colleges, there must be some way - some standard - by which they can be judged, at least at the minimal level. Accreditation provides this. Hence, any degree-offering online substitute must at least be accredited by an outside entity of value itself. Else, its degree means nothing and won't to any prospective employer either.
What official body has accredited the institution of higher learning? There are six major accrediting bodies in the United States. In the case of the Southern U.S. (and for Loyola) the accrediting body is the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
2) Advantage of learning one-to-one (tutorials):
This is critical and maybe one of the most crucial components but may not be present (for obvious reasons) in distant learning. For example, this means when a student encounters a difficult impasse, as he or she surely will, he can meet one-to-one with a professor and hash out the difficulty. At Loyola, for example, professors were always available and also conducted tutorials (weekly meetings with only a few students for problem solving or question resolution purposes. )
When I taught? Space Physics (including labs)?at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, I always set aside office hours to meet one- on- one with students having difficulties. I did the same when I taught at Harrison College (physics, math) in Barbados. Students often told me after the semester that these sessions meant more than the regular classroom contacts because they were more directly challenged to show their ability at more fundamental, as well as critical thinking levels.
Those office hours often meant the difference between a student doing well on a class project, or not. Or more critically, passing the course, or failing it. A student- I don't care how diligent he is, simply can't obtain the same measure of mastery without that intense contact which is directed to the sole purpose of resolving the difficulty. It simply isn't the same as staring at a passive computer monitor - or even an online tutorial or physics class when you can't get answers to questions or immediate feedback at that instant. (From the TIME author's piece, you can at Udacity, but it is kind of a 'cut and paste' homogeneous operation. For example, one of Udacity's general physics instructors - an Andy Brown - while he can toss out assorted questions every few minutes (the average college student's attention span is said to be 9-12 mins. before drifting), he cannot give you assorted lab materials and have you design your own experiment to measure the acceleration of gravity, g, on the spot!)
3) Development of Writing Skills:
Back in the 'day' - before the arrival of the egregious 'teacher evaluation forms' and hence the blackmail of profs to get unearned high grades, in-depth writing was part of nearly all courses, from physics to philosophy. Today, because of time constraints or whatever...that's almost entirely vanished. Very few college students are asked to write comprehensive (e.g. for homework) ?essays such as we were at Loyola (in philosophy, English?and theology) or engage in displaying the sort of complex reasoning, say in physics, as I've regularly?demanded of?my students in physics, or space physics. 'Writing' then, is regarded as mostly a marginal or side issue today, when in fact it is the core demonstration of thought, including advanced thought. If a student can't write, one can make the claim he can't think - or at least cogently and clearly express his thoughts, which amounts to the same thing.
Most college students today, according to assorted surveys, claim an average of 15 minutes of writing per nightly homework, compared to nearly 2?? hours back in the 1960s. However, and this is important, not even that 15 minute threshold is met by the online for profit outfits like Udacity - which seem to prefer short form answer, on-the-spot questions, responses. (The TIME writer never mentioned any advanced writing exercises, say in Andy Brown's Udacity physics class, along the lines of comparing Newtonian gravitational theory with Einsteinian general relativity, or how Newton's law of gravitation helped to refine Kepler's laws of planetary motion).
4) Socialization aspect and learning interactively as a group:
In?the Loyola first year?philosophy class (see image shown) we actually learned from each other. Using the "Socratic Method" (made famous by the character known as "Professor Kingsfield" in the series Paper Chase) our prof, Fr.Hecker , would press and probe students one by one to elicit the optimum answers and insights in exploring whatever aspect came up. Thus, as one student answered the question (and thereby introduced a new question for another) we referenced our own resolution by way of his or her answer. As the process continued, each new question?pursued more deeply by?Fr. Hecker , we assimilated it for?further study, reference. This dynamic interplay is not possible when a single student tries to master a difficult subject via long distance access only. One way I could describe it is the class experience is three dimensional but the distance learner's is at most two dimensional.
Sure there are many advantages to distance learning, such as saving gas and time, as well as not having to expose oneself to thousands of people with different ideas (that you may not like) but the total college experience is to me, what makes it unique - and which one can't just obtain from online learning.
Lastly, there is the key issue of what is college for? As I've intimated many times before, I do not believe one can adopt a strictly utilitarian stance and absolutely expect you will land a high profile job, no matter how many tens of thousands you've shelled out. I am not alone in this!? In his own perceptive take ('The Myth of Higher Education') Dr. Stephen Mason in an issue of Integra the journal of Intertel,?argued cogently?that a huge error of American education is orientating it explicitly for the utilitarian purpose of making money or getting a job.
?As he points out, this is terribly short-sighted, and what if after enormous expense no remunerative job is forthcoming? (A serious possibility in today's world where even high tech computer and engineering jobs are being dispatched to India thanks to GE and Cisco). It therefore is extremely parlous and presumptive for a person to expend an enormous amount on either a standard 'brick and mortar' university education or an online -distant learning one, if the sole objective is to earn a living based on one's degree. In Mason's take(op. cit.):
?"the bottom line regarding a well -rounded education is that it has nothing to do with any kind of bottom line. Its value (non-monetary) is to be found in the quality it adds to one's life. It allows one to better appreciate music, art, history and literature. It contributes to a better understanding of language and culture, nature and philosophy. It expands rather than limits horizons and replaces faith and belief with reason and logic."
Mason adds that it "teaches a person to live - not to earn a living" and that living encompasses an impetus for further learning just for its own sake. If a fantastic, well-paying job also comes with it, that's icing on the cake. Fortunately, when I attended Loyola University (1964-67), the whole thrust was about two things: 1) critical thinking (now tested regularly on the Graduate Record Exam which must normally be taken before one undertakes post-graduate education) and 2) open inquiry that motivates further learning.
I have found both of these immensely crucial and useful in parsing today's complex political environment, which is why I also blog so often about poltical issues with complex?subtexts?- in the interests of sharing. I only wish more of our citizens would or could possess these same advantages in the interests of making fewer parlous electoral errors - which in the long run exact a terrible cost on our nation.
As for the online courses offered, such as those at Yale and MIT, I believe most would agree with me that they are best used for 'continuing education' of already degreed citizens. Learning in this sense ought not cease with a piece of paper or parchment but be continuous until one ceases to breathe .....or loses cognitive functions. If more Americans also agreed with this, we might see a much more intelligent, informed electorate .....as opposed to voters (according to a UCLA political sci. prof on Chris Hayes' 'UP' this morning) who identify with Mitt Romney and his "values" whether he acts as the savage Rightist Plutocrat, or the phoney baloney "moderate".
