The $60.2 million Downtown ballpark will begin to take shape over the next 30 days as construction crews lay the cement for the main concourse area. Crews will begin pouring concrete this weekend for the 46,000-square-foot concourse, where fans will be able to move between field-level seating, restrooms and concession stands once the stadium is open. Bill Studer, deputy city manager, said the 16,000 cubic yards of concrete will be the first part of the stadium that will be visible from the street."We are excited because there has been a lot going on here the last couple of months, but it has been below ground," Studer said. "It is nice to see something being built above ground. This will be where the main seating bowl goes." City officials said that 51 local workers, with Concrete Specialties of El Paso, are working on the concourse project. Currently, there are more than 100 construction workers from the El Paso-area working on the entire stadium."The concourse is like the family superhighway," said Brad Taylor, general manager of the Triple-A baseball team that will play at the ballpark. "It's where families will enter the stadium, go buy food, take the kids to the play areas or the team store." The concourse level will take about 30 days to lay along the first base and third base lines, Studer said. Other levels of concrete, such as the second level, third level and the outfield structures, will be laid later."People will begin to see the shape of the ballpark come together," Studer said. "The majority of the seats will be along the left field line (western side of the stadium)."The El Paso City Council agreed to build the ballpark in June 2012. The city entered into a lease with MountainStar Sports, which bought the Tucson Padres Triple-A minor league baseball team. MountainStar will move the team to El Paso in 2014. Recent rain has delayed the construction for hours at times, but it is not something that surprised construction crews and the ballpark seems to be on schedule, Studer said. "We expect the ballpark to be ready and in use by opening day of 2014," Studer said. Taylor added that he has been impressed at the progress made at the construction site. "If you are someone who frequents Downtown or goes by once a week, you will begin to see progress every time you walk by," Taylor said. Aaron Bracamontes may be reached at 546-6156.
